What is TLS?

The Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) compliance standards now requires sites to be encrypted with Transport Layer Security (TLS) which is the successor to Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption. 

How do I enable TLS?

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Click 'Tools' then 'Internet Options' to open the following window. 
  3. Click on the 'Advanced' tab, and scroll to the bottom
  4. Check the 'Use TLS 1.0' box
  5. Click 'OK'

Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 and newer

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Click 'Tools' then 'Internet Options' to open the following window. 
  3. Click on the 'Advanced' tab, and scroll to the bottom
  4. Check the 'Use TLS 1.0' box
  5. Click 'OK'

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Open Firefox
  2. Click 'Firefox' in the top left corner, then go to 'Options' and click 'Options'
  3. Click on the 'Advanced' tab and then the 'Encryption' sub tab
  4. Check the 'Use TLS 1.0' box
  5. Click 'OK'

Google Chrome

Within Chrome, its Internet Options defaults to the Internet Explorer options.  Please follow the steps listed within the Enabling TLS 1.0 in the Internet Explorer 7 and Above section of this Document. After you complete these steps you will be able to use TLS within Google Chrome.  

 

Opera

  1. Open Opera
  2. Click Opera in the to left corner, then go to 'Preferences'
  3. Click on the 'Advanced' tab, then 'Security' in the left pane
  4. From the main pane, select 'Security Protocols...'
  5. Check the 'Use TLS 1' box. 
  6. Click 'OK'
